Vodafone presents in the city the first flight in a real urban environment controlled by 5G beyond the pilot’s line of sight
Never before has an urban space in the world been prepared for a drone flight controlled by the 5G network beyond the pilot’s line of sight. And the skyscrapers of Benidorm have become the track for which this demonstration has been made. This has been presented by those responsible for the city council and Vodafone, the operator that has provided the necessary technology for what they have described as a milestone in the deployment of this network.
The Poniente beach and the Belgium park have been the two scenarios selected to show the possibilities that 5G brings. In the first they have simulated how a package can be transported to the Island of Benidorm, four kilometers away. Those responsible for the company have chosen it as an example of what could be a faster and more efficient emergency service .
The second is the one that has raised the most expectations. The objective was to demonstrate how a system of static, temporal and dynamic exclusion zones based on mobile network and developed by Vodafone works. Aircraft control and live broadcasting from the drone have been carried out through the 5G network. In this they have taught how flight conflicts between these machines are resolved in real time, which stand out as one of the benefits of centralized control through the mobile network.
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, has been proud that with these flights “the future is landing in Benidorm” with “such immense possibilities, which seem unbeatable.” Pérez has stressed the importance of “public-private collaboration” to carry out this demonstration. And with this he recalled that Benidorm was ” the first municipality to provide a drone to its Local Police .” In that way, they presume to have improved security and attention to citizenship.
Security has also spoken Santiago Tenorio, the network director of Vodafone Group. In fact, the State Air Safety Agency has given its special authorization for this pilot test. With this deployment, he wanted to show how drone flight technology increases “precision and safety zones in an urban environment where there can be many drones per square kilometer.” This helps reduce the latency that is achieved by the higher speed provided by 5G technology , the centralization of the control that also allows and interference mitigation techniques. With this demonstration, the company has also advanced the implementation of 5G in more Spanish cities .
- Movement. In the event that a drone coincides in the same airspace with another of the police, for example, the conflict can be resolved simply by modifying the flight altitude. It is a way of giving priority to one of these machines over the other as specified by an authority. In emergencies they could be used to stop the movement of unmanned and unauthorized aircraft, a very useful function for police drones.
- Position. New smaller and faster ships demand new ways to control their position. Thanks to the 5G mobile network it can be done. This technique is the RPS (Radio Positioning System) geolocation. With it, the distance between base stations is much less than in rural areas. Hence they expect an accuracy even greater than that obtained so far.
